" The Artist Mame-Diarra NIANG uses the camera as a tool for research. crystallising impressions of scenes she later conceptualizes and reconfigures into abstract, metaphorical landscapes.
Born in Lyon (France) but raised between France, Abidjan and Dakar, Niang has focused her photographic practice on a articulation of what she termed " the plasticity of territory" _ to seethe world as a never-ending metamorphosis of the self. The images from her series SAHEL GRIS , a condensed excerpt of which appears here, was recorded as she wandered along a former airstrip in Dakar . At first glance, the people-less pictures appear to serve a rote, documentary function reminiscent of those in Ed Ruscha's artist's book Every Building on Sunset Strip. Taken together, however, one is struck by the deeply-felt statement that begins to emerge in Niang's Engagement with seemingly impenetrable"citadel" of boxy, concrete structures that crop up in various formations in the arid landscape. "
